How to Answer "Tell Me About Yourself" in Tech Interviews (STAR Method)

The opening 90 seconds of an interview determine whether the hiring team leans in with enthusiasm or mentally checks out. Yet "Tell me about yourself" remains the most mishandled question by freshers and experienced developers alike.

The 3-Part Answer Formula

Never recite your entire resume chronologically. Instead, use the Present → Past → Future framework:

1. The Present (30 Seconds): Who you are right now, your primary technical domain, and your current capstone or engineering focus.
2. The Past (30 Seconds): 1 or 2 key projects where you solved a real problem, highlighting demonstrable technologies (e.g. React, Node.js, SQL).
3. The Future (30 Seconds): Why this specific company and role aligns with where you want to build depth.

Structuring Technical Stories with the STAR Method

When interviewers ask follow-up questions regarding challenges you faced, anchor your responses in STAR:

• Situation: The business or architectural context of the project.
• Task: The specific problem or bottleneck you needed to address.
• Action: The concrete steps and code decisions you personally executed.
• Result: The measurable outcome (e.g., 40% latency reduction, zero API downtime, or test coverage).
